Synopsis (English short)

Jochen Hick's new film portrays Tom Weise, one of the initiators of the HustlaBalls ­ an event originally created in order to encourage the acceptance of male prostitutes, but also to launch a rent boy website.

After his parents split and, having lost all contact with them, this slightly-built former student of politics decides to go to New York at the beginning of the 1990s. Being virus-positive, he is obliged to live in the USA illegally. In fact, according to the law, he cannot even pay a visit to this country.
At first Tom has a hard time eking out a living as an escort. Unable to earn enough money, he winds up on the streets without a roof over his head.

In the end, he succeeds in helping Jeffrey Davis set up an internet page, rentboy.com, which, ten years later, becomes the largest website for escorts. Increasingly beset by health issues, loneliness and drug abuse, in 2006 Tom eventually finds someone with whom he can share his life. He and his Afro-American partner Keith decide to go to Berlin. This marks Tom¹s first trip to Germany in 15 years. A few days after their arrival, the Berlin Hustla Ball takes place.

The ostensibly self-confident businessman of the film¹s first few minutes gradually reveals himself to be a man with weaknesses, fears and dreams.
Initially following Tom Weise as he organises the last of his parties in the US, the film then accompanies him as he returns to Berlin. Besides being a vibrant portrait, Hick's film is also a socio-cultural exploration of the New World and the old, as reflected in a marginalised group. His documentary also affords a fascinating insight into the universe and the minds of escorts and party-makers.

Le nouveau film de Jochen Hick fait le portrait de Tom Weise, l’un des initiateurs du HustlaBall, une manifestation conçue à l’origine pour renforcer la tolérance vis-à-vis des prostitués masculins mais aussi pour propager le site Internet des rent boys. Assez petit de stature et brouillé avec ses parents avec lesquels il a rompu tout contact, l’ancien étudiant en sciences politiques part pour New York au début des années quatre-vingt-dix. Etant séropositif, il ne peut vivre aux USA que dans la clandestinité, la loi lui interdisant même l’entrée sur le territoire de ce pays. A New York, Tom se débrouille tant bien que mal en faisant l’escorte. Il ne gagne pas d’argent et se retrouve à la rue. Finalement, Jeffrey Davids l’aide à créer le site Internet « rentboy.com » qui sera dix ans plus tard le plus important site pour l’escorte masculine. Tom souffre de plus en plus de problèmes de santé, de la solitude et de la consommation excessive de drogue lorsqu’il trouve enfin un partenaire en 2006. Cela fait quinze ans qu’il n’a pas remis les pieds en Allemagne lorsqu’il décide de revenir à Berlin avec Keith, qui est Afro-américain. Le HustlaBall berlinois a lieu quelques jours après. L’homme d’affaires qui a l’air très sûr de lui pendant les premières minutes du film se révèle de plus en plus comme un être avec des aiblesses, des angoisses et des rêves. Le film suit Tom Weise lors des dernières partys qu’il a organisées à New York et montre son retour à Berlin. Le film de Hick est un portrait vivant en même temps qu’une excursion socioculturelle entre le nouveau et l’ancien monde reflétée dans un milieu marginalisé, avec de passionnants aperçus de l’univers et de la mentalité des escortes et des organisateurs de partys.

Il nuovo film di Jochen Hick è il ritratto di Tom Weise, uno dei pionieri di HustlaBall – un evento nato in origine per migliorare l'accettazione della prostituzione maschile, ma anche per lanciare il sito internet di un prostituto. In seguito alla separazione dei suoi genitori, e avendo perso qualsiasi contatto con loro, questo esile e precoce studente di scienze politiche decide, agli inizi degli anni '90, di trasferirsi a New York. Essendo ieropositivo, è costretto a vivere illegalmente negli USA. Infatti, secondo la legge, non potrebbe nemmeno fare un viaggio in questo paese. In principio Tom fa fatica ad abituarsi alla vita come accompagnatore. Non riuscendo a guadagnare abbastanza soldi, finisce in mezzo alla strada, senza un tetto sotto cui stare. Alla fine, riesce ad aiutare Jeffrey Davids a pubblicare un sito internet, rentboy.com, il quale, dieci anni dopo, diventa il sito più frequentato e conosciuto dai gigolò. In condizioni di salute sempre più precarie, rimasto in solitudine e tossico-dipendente, nel 2006 Tom finalmente

Dopo il divorzio dei genitori e l'abbandono della famiglia, Weise abbandonò l'università per andare a New York all'inizio degli anni '90. Dopo aver contratto il virus HIV, è rimasto negli Stati uniti illegalmente.
